Oh My Bug

In the internet cyberspace, spiders need to eat “bugs” to survive. They build up cloud-sharing "web" sites to catch bugs and compete with who gets the bugs first. Lucas Pink is a cyber spider who wants to join in the bug-catching competition but is not fast enough. He comes up with the idea to take advantage of the special objects in cyberspace to slow down other spiders and make himself the winner. Let's help Lucas catch bugs and beat other spiders!

Design Process

Theme Interpretation

Our understanding of the game jam's Web theme. One is the physical spider web, the other is the internet/online website's "web." Since we thought that only using the spiderweb idea was too boring, we decided to combine the two understandings and apply them as cyber spider "web" sites. For the implementation, we build up webs and let players interact with game elements on them for simulating website-using engagement and repeatedly trying puzzle-resolving experiences. Moreover, the 2D cyberpunk art style implies our design and interpretation of the theme to players visually.

Therefore, we came up the concept --

When we talk about the "web," the first showed up idea could be internet websites or spiderwebs. It seems impossible to consider them in the same way. But how about "cyber spiders weave webs to build up websites?"

Gameplay Mechanic

Puzzle Elements:

  • Falling objects: Slow down enemy spiders to weak threat.

  • Speakers: Pause enemy spiders to weak threat.

  • Pills: Increase the player spider's size to power-up.

  • The spider-eating chain: Threat & power-up | bigger spiders can eat smaller spiders.

Level Design

Fundamental Game Elements:

  • Spider moveable white webs: Visually highlight and inform players.

  • Un-moveable gray webs: Visual build-up.

  • Player spider: Player avatar.

  • Enemy spider(s): Threat and puzzle element.

  • The goal bug: The goal for determining the game outcome.

Takeaways

Overall

We (Team MCF) wanted to provide players with repeatable puzzle-resolving experiences in Oh My Bug to let them overcome puzzles with different manners and ideas. Each puzzle has multiple elements and objects but only one correct resolving method. Players must repeatedly attempt the short puzzles to reach the proper resolution and win the game. There are three levels, and each level introduces players to a new mechanic to enrich players engagement.
